Creating GIFs from your Twitch VODs and Highlights

In this tutorial I’m going to show you how to quickly make your Twitch highlights and videos into GIFs.  Let’s get right into it.

Recently I’ve been using GIFs in things like tweets and on websited, and I wanted to share how I make them quickly. The easiest way to do this is by using a video highlight that we’ve already created.  I typically keep my highlights under 5 minutes, and our goal for the GIF is to be 15 seconds or under.

With that in mind, let’s download a Twitch highlight – to do so go to Twitch Down, click “connect with Twitch” and login via the Twitch API.

Click the highlights tab, then select the highlight you would like to use and hit Download.  It might take bit for the video to process and download, but once it’s done, we can now convert it to a GIF.

Our next step will be to go to Giphy.com , a link will be in the description below. There’s actually a couple of other great sites that do similar things but for now, this is my prefered site to use.

Signing up for an account is recommended, but not required.  Now, all we need to do is click the “create” button, then simply drag our highlight video file onto the page to upload it.  Once it’s uploaded, use the start time slider to select where you want your GIF to begin, then use the duration slider to select how long you would like your GIF to last.  If you’d like, you can add caption, select a caption style and color.  Also, you can use tags to categorize your GIF as well.  Once everything is entered in correctly, hit ‘Create Gif’.

After the file processes, you will now be able to share via various social networks, and get code to embed into a web page.  However, I like to click the “advanced” tab and download my GIF by clicking the download button.  This will allow me to directly upload the file where it’s needed.

As I mentioned before, there’s a lot of sites that follow a similar process.  Another notable one is http://gfycat.com/, which I recommend checking out as well.  The quality from this site is typically higher, however I’ve ran into a few problems on occasion – but they’re typically minor issues.
